This playlist is a leviathan, it is a behemoth of music. I’d like to invite you to take a trip down the rabbit hole that is the massive sxsw comprehensive-ish playlist ‘13It is 1,325 Tracks from the 1,325 artists that are going to be gracing the music festival with their presence.

It’s what you want right? You’re not afraid?

Yes it’ll be rigorous - just like the sxsw is rigorous. I have faith in you. You can listen to all of this music. You can go to all the shows. You can be a champion.

Good luck!

‘Give Me Butter! Always Butter!’

Fernand Point is the father of modern French Cuisine. He knew a thing or two about butter. The book featuring his notes and quotes, Ma Gastronomie, is being published again - this time with a forward from the brilliant Thomas Keller and features Point’s fried egg recipe:

“I was most impressed with Point’s fried-egg “recipe”: warm butter, don’t let it sizzle, slip in the egg, keep the heat low, wait until the white is creamy and the yolk hot. It’s perfect, foolproof, easy, yet not intuitive.”

You can read the New York Times article on Ma Gastronomie here!

Faux Fix @ Whisk and Ladle, April 1st

Andrew Sherman and I went to a living room show at Brooklyn’s underground Whisk & Ladle on Sunday night. The moody alt-pop duo Faux Fix captivated the crowd with their haunting melodies and atmospheric arrangements. Though Katie Chastain’s vocals would be enough to transfix any audience, the rich soundscape was sweetened with an antique Marxophone, tuned wine glasses, and this iPad app. Sunday’s show was the last stop on a 2 week living room tour across the country, but don’t worry, they’ll be back soon. Let us know if you want to get in on their next exclusive performance.

Here are a few photos from the evening’s performance. Special mention must also go to the opening act, Jonny Rodgers. His gorgeous and inventive songs were a perfect way to start the set.

Every band that is playing at sxsw - pretty much

Listening to this playlist is like drowning for your ears. Be careful when listening to this playlist. The worst part of me wants to start a tired argument to be had about gatekeepers and the vice and victory of the internets - but really this just a playlist with every band that is playing at sxsw - pretty much!

On the sxsw website there is a list of bands and artists that are going to be playing shows at the festival next week. That is a long list and it’s not even that comprehensive! So using the mighty powers of Spotify - I put all the performing bands going to sxsw into one gigantic 24 Hour playlist of music:

sxsw comprehensive-ish playlist

In a way this playlist is indicative of the sxsw experience. There are so many bands buzzing around that you’re pretty much inundated into a music coma. This playlist will be good exercise for your ear muscles - when you’re taking a white cab alongside the cab driver’s girlfriend and teenage daughter to a Diplo concert at 2a in the morning you’ll be happy that you did!

Tune In!

Butter Creative Director Andrew Sherman and Executive Producer Ian Jeffreys were featured in the most recent addition of the Source’s Special Features. It’s an interesting read that does a good job of bringing together some a variety of thoughts about music and its roles in cultural and advertising trends.

“Sinatra would be doing ads if he were around today!  We’ve found that the list of who’s available and who’s not changes almost day to day.”

That is a crazy thought, but totally on the mark. Ian makes the point that sometimes cultural trends are spurned on by advertising just as much as advertising is influenced by cultural trends. Culture is a feedback loop and that feedback loop is going crazy with the internet fueling it’s fire.

Like it or hate it, things are changing like we’ve never seen before. Andrew says it best:

“We’re seeing the birth of a global community that is evolving at an exponential rate, and the music and sounds being created defy anything we could have imagined even ten years ago.”

Hangover Cures from Kingsley Amis

Amis_on_drink_post_medium

We all had a good time at the AICPs, right! But now we are all hungover as sin and there is work to be done. Luckily for us, Kingsley Amis has some hangover cures that you can read over at Boast Blog USA.

Number 1: Start telling yourself how lucky you are to be feeling so bloody awful.

Lucky me!

Free Ringtones

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always found the phenomena of ringtones to be puzzling.  I never understood why someone would want to pay $3 for a 10 second version of a song, when they could have the whole thing for 99¢. Wouldn’t that just make you get sick of your favorite jam even faster? At the same time, I do get pretty tired of the boxed rings and long for a little variety in my life from time to time. So we started making iPhone ringtones from some the favorite tracks in our library. And now we’re sharing them with you. Lucky you!

Our first ringtone is available at this here link. Download it to your phone like the happy lady in the stock photo above did!

SXSW Top Ten

If you were watching twitter or facebook last week, you probably saw an obnoxious amount of posts from SXSW.  Well, like so many other New Yorkers I also flew to Austin for the week to participate in all the madness.  I’m not going to waste anyone’s time by adding yet another lugubrious editorial to the blog pile.  Instead, I’ve complied a collection of free tracks from the best bands witnessed or buzzed about during my 7 days. That post’ll be coming soon. While you wait - take a look at my Top Ten!
